Crisis bij WPP, onderzoek naar vermeend wangedrag Martin Sorrell
Grote onrust bij WPP. De Raad van Commissarissen (The Board) heeft opdracht gegeven tot een onderzoek naar CEO en mede-eigenaar Martin Sorrell, meestal met gevoel voor Britse folklore aangeduid als Sir Martin Sorrell.
De man die bekend staat als het boegbeeld van het wereldwijde reclamevak zit in de problemen en WPP - Wire and Plastic Products - ook.
Over wat er precies aan de hand is, wordt in de internationale media volop gespeculeerd. Dit is het statement dat WPP zelf naar buiten bracht:
"The Board of WPP has appointed independent counsel to conduct an investigation in response to an allegation of personal misconduct against Sir Martin Sorrell, Chief Executive Officer of WPP. The investigation is ongoing. The allegations do not involve amounts which are material to WPP."
Het zou gaan om misbruik van company assets. Ook zou er worden gekeken naar improper personal behavior.
Martin Sorrell reageert in een verklaring als volgt: "I reject the allegation unreservedly but recognise that [WPP] has to investigate it. I understand that this process will be completed shortly. Obviously, I shall play no part in the management of the investigation under way. As a significant share owner, my commitment to the company, which I founded over thirty years ago, remains absolute – to our people, our clients, our shareholders and all of our many stakeholders."
Wat in ieder geval wel duidelijk is, is dat WPP het niet goed doet als bedrijf. De markt zit tegen. De cijfers over 2017 waren niet goed en de vooruitzichten voor 2018 ook niet. De aandelenkoers van WPP zakte van 102 dollar half februari tot 79 dollar begin april.
WPP heeft wereldwijd 406 bedrijven. In Nederland is WPP onder meer actief met Ogilvy, Wunderman en GroupM. 30 Nederlandse WPP bedrijven worden binnenkort gezamenlijk gehuisvest in Rivierstaete in Amsterdam.
